man who spoke very early in the morning" before they arrived, he said.
He said the Forum was in contact with the national director of the march, Reverend Benjamin Chavis, who at first supported its participation and later did not.

Forum board members at the pre-march rally.
Boykin said the several march organizers the Forum was in contact with were supportive. He said Chavis' support only fell short with the openly-gay speaker who never materialized. Chavis was recently the director of the NAACP. He also spoke at the 1993 March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights, said Boykin.
While the Forum did not endorse the march,

Forum founder Phill Wilson wrote in the lesbian-gay weekly Washington Blade that “any call that addresses mobilizing black men must include all black men."
A statement from the Forum read: "Because of the Nation of Islam's involvement in the march and its history of homophobia and sexism, many black gay men have expressed concerns about whether or not to participate and whether they can do so openly and safely."
The Forum decided that "we will no longer allow outsiders to dictate who is welcome at the black family table or to divide African Americans by sexual orientation or by gender."
"We have experienced oppression in the ways that our straight brothers have not,” wrote Wilson. "We understand the nature of the multi-headed monster of racism, sexism and homophobia."
"This march is not and cannot be about whether or not one supports Minister Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam, or the Reverend Benjamin Chavis," clarified Wilson in the Blade days before the march.
The main pre-march event was a conference on HIV/AIDS, the role of women, and the contribution of black gay men to the black community. Other activities coordinated for the days before the march included a social, a spiritual service and the gay black play Metamorphoses.
Are There Angels Among Us?
Tell Us Your Story...
Here is your chance to tell Chronicle readers about the "Angels" in your life. Is it your mom, who marched with you at Pride carrying a sign that said, "I Love My Gay Son"? Or is it your doctor, who helps to keep your T-cells and your spirits up? Perhaps it's your partner, who puts up with your passion for 70s disco tunes, and loves you anyway. Or maybe it's your new baby that you and your girlfriend had planned on having for such a long time..
Whoever they may be, submit a brief essay (400 words or less) telling us about your angel. Essays will be reviewed by the editorial board of the
Gay People's Chronicle, and the winning submission will be published in the November 24 issue. The winner will receive two pairs of tickets to see Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches on December 5th and Part 2: Perestroika on December 7th, Tony
